Bring your ATV or OHV to the Royal Gorge Region for epic rides along miles upon miles of trails ideal for off-roading. Check out the following areas for a great day on the trails.
Texas Creek
Just a few miles west of Canon City lies the off-road mecca, Texas Creek Recreation Area, where riders will discover an extensive trail system providing great views of the Arkansas River Valley and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. With many different trails spanning the spectrum in difficulty, all riders can find something to enjoy on these trails.
Texas Creek Recreation Area is often rideable year-round because it doesn’t get much snow, and the snow it does get usually melts quickly. There are some mines and prospects to look at, and views from the higher hills reveal scenic views of the Sangre de Cristo Range.
This area has around 45 miles of marked trails the range from easy 4×4 roads to narrow and rocky ATV trails with sharp switchbacks. At lower elevations, the trails wind through a mix of various scrub, juniper, and pinon pine trees. As you continue to climb in elevation, the vegetation changes to mostly spruce, aspen, and Douglas- fir trees. Mule deer, bighorn sheep, and elk can sometimes be seen in this area.
Penrose Commons
This large area has over 30 miles of trails ranging from fast and smooth ATC trails and narrow singletrack to rock 4 x 4 trails. Vegetation ranges from juniper trees to scrub brush. The main staging area has plenty of parking, a vault toilet, and an information kiosk. The area is open year-round but may temporarily close during inclement weather.
Seep Springs
Another option for OHVing is Seep Springs, 15 miles northwest of Cañon City on County Road 69. High points along the 16 miles of roads and trails give visitors open ranchland views as they wind through pinon and juniper woodlands and ponderosa pine forests with sandstone rocks throughout.
