Those looking for a bit of a challenge combined with some breathtaking scenery should add The Bank to their plans. Located just north of Cañon City, CO, this trail doesn’t have any major obstacles but still clocks in with a moderate rating. The rocky surface will jostle you around for nearly the entire 7 miles, and the off-camber can test your resolve. The reward comes after climbing about 1,000 feet as the bumpy descent gives way to sweeping views of the valley and colorful rock formations below.
The Bank is a great year-round 4×4 destination, but do check conditions if you’re not used to off-roading in some snow. Secluded camping options can also be found all along the trail, so make it an overnight adventure.
Red Canyon Park
Wind through the towering cliffs of Red Canyon Park and spot all the monoliths: Pioneer, Window Rock, the Sphinx, and Hoot Owl. 10 miles north of Cañon City, this 4×4 trail takes you through junipers and cedars with scenic lookout points at almost every turn. Keep an eye out for dinosaur tracks, petroglyphs, and wildlife along the way.
Just a few miles west of Cañon City lies the off-road mecca, Texas Creek Recreation Area, where riders will discover an extensive trail system providing great views of the Arkansas River Valley and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. With many different trails spanning the spectrum in difficulty, all riders can find something to enjoy on these trails.
Ridable nearly year-round, these trails are a great option for winter riding. Any snow that does hit tends to melt quickly. The Jeep and ATV trails of the Texas Creek Recreation Area peak at 9,000 feet, with 45 miles of marked trails. Look out for wildlife as they are commonly seen around this area.
