There are 7 GMUs in Fremont County alone, which says something about its size and available open land. They are GMUs 57, 58, 59, 86, 69, 581, and 691.
GMUs 57 and 58
These GMUs are part of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Area. Here, you will find deer in the lower elevation areas. The best elk hunting is at higher elevation from Cameron Mountain north to Trout Creek Pass. Small game, like dusky grouse and snowshoe hare, are at higher elevation, and early in the season, waterfowl are found along streams and rivers. For good pronghorn hunting, head to the north end of GMU 58.
GMUs 59 and 581
These GMUs are located in the Pikes Peak and Cripple Creek regions. In GMU 59, there is good mule deer hunting south of Gold Camp Road, elk hunting above timberline, and small game hunting throughout the entire unit. GMU 581 will have mule deer in the northern and western portions of the unit, elk during the winter, and pronghorn north of Eleven Mile State Park.
GMUs 69, 691, and 86
Located in parts of the Wet and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, these GMUs offer a chance to grab pronghorn, mule deer, elk, and small game. The terrain is relatively flat with rolling hills and steep, rocky canyons.
